You are Never Too Old to BE CREATIVE!

Whitney Glandon

When Barbara was discouraged by a loved one who doubted her talent, she put down her brush. That was 70 years ago. Today, at 96, Barbara is proving that creativity doesn’t follow a timeline—and certainly doesn’t listen to old societal norms. In fact, she now has two scarf designs under her belt, and she’s just getting started.  Barbara has always been creative but as she states it "I was creative in a different way, running four fashion businesses, designing a sweater and a silk dress line but never in painting or drawing."

Barbara’s story is a powerful reminder that age takes a backseat when it comes to creativity. The belief that creativity is reserved for a select few or that it’s something you’re born with couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you're 16 or 96, we can all create. It’s not about fitting into someone else’s definition of what talent should look like; it’s about expressing yourself, taking risks, and finding joy in the process.

So, what are you creating today? Creativity means something different to each of us. For some, it’s writing a poem or choreographing a new dance. For others, it might be composing a song, trying a new recipe, or even perfecting the art of making a great oat milk latte. Whatever it is, it’s special, unique, and a reflection of who you are. It’s the act of bringing something new into the world, no matter how big or small, that makes it so powerful.

The importance of sitting down to create something every day can’t be overstated. Whether it’s 10 minutes or 2 hours, that daily practice of creativity nurtures your soul and keeps your mind vibrant. It’s not just about the final product; it’s about the process of discovery (or rediscovery) and expression that matters most.

Too often, we get caught up in the mindset that creativity is something out of reach, only meant for artists or people with special skills. But the reality is, creativity lives within all of us. The challenge is clearing the distractions, breaking down the barriers, and silencing those old societal voices that tell us we can’t.

Barbara is living proof that it’s never too late to pursue your passion. If there’s one thing we can learn from Barbara, it’s that creativity doesn’t have an expiration date. So whatever it is you’ve been holding back on—whether it’s picking up a paintbrush, writing a story, or trying something new—now is the time. Women can do anything, and the world is waiting for what you’ll create.

So go ahead, let creativity lead the way. Like Barbara, you might just surprise yourself with what you can accomplish at any age.

Thank you for reading!
