These aren't just trees - they're Forest Gardens, a transformative approach that helps families living in extreme poverty feed themselves, restore degraded land, and build sustainable futures for their communities.

The Problem

In sub-Saharan Africa, 422 million people live below the poverty line surviving on less than $700 per year. Smallholder farmers produce around one-third of the world's food, yet they are often among the poorest and most food-insecure people on the planet. Families who rely on the land to survive are trapped in cycles of hunger and poverty.

At the same time, unsustainable farming practices are degrading the land. To grow enough food to eat and sell, farmers are encouraged to clear their land of trees and native species. Many practice monocrop agriculture growing only one type of crop, year after year which depletes the soil, provides just a single harvest annually, and leaves families vulnerable to total crop failure. This destructive cycle harms both people and the planet, driving deforestation, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss.

Forest Gardens are a sustainable, regenerative farming model that transforms lives and landscapes.

Through Trees for the Future, farmers receive the tools, training, and support needed to shift away from monocrop farming and create thriving, biodiverse gardens that:
